Elizabeth of Shrusbury's first house
Today I visited Haddon and Hardwick Hall. Haddon Hall has been used for three well known movies; Pride and Prejudice, The Princess Bride, and Jane Eyre. It is one of the oldest houses. It was pretty impressive. My favorite part was the long gallery. In most houses we have been to the long gallery has been divided into rooms, so it was fun to see one still as one large room. The long gallery was used to get your exercise when the weather wasn't the greatest.
We visited Elizabeth's first house, which is in ruins now and is over 500 years old. It was amazing! The windows are open and framed by wood. It was crazy to be in a building that has been weathered for five hundred years and see what details remained intact. The view from the top level was ideal. Elizabeth was a lucky woman.
Hardwick Hall was fun to explore. Hardwick Hall has always been one of my favorite houses from the outside. I love the many windows that let natural light into the rooms. When this house was build glass was expensive, so the more glass you had the wealthier you were. Elizabeth wanted this house to be good enough for the queen to stay. Elizabeth also labeled this her home by placing and ES detailing on the top of the roof. I especially liked the lights in the house because they cast beautiful shadows.
